"This is the fifth home my wife and I have had designed and constructed, so we’re not novices.

We purchased a home, not because we especially liked it, but because we loved the location and views. Initially, we thought we could save the foundation, but the house had to be totally razed.

I got bids from four reputable builders; R-Squared’s estimate was comparable to the others, but what really stood out is that Joel himself would be the foreman.

He’s not only very bright and an excellent builder; he has a great sense of aesthetics and excellent taste and was able to make suggestions that enhanced our home.

Joel was on top of everything; things were incredibly well coordinated. As we are in the financial field, we understand the intricacies of estimating. R-Squared came in so close to their original estimate that any overage was virtually negligible.

"We purchased a home that was nearly perfect for us. However, we soon determined we wanted not only a larger kitchen but one that was closer to a real 'chef’s kitchen.' Also, our screen porch was less than useful because of its odd shape.

Though we’d handled total renovations on two prior kitchens, we realized we needed professional assistance this time. We were changing the footprint of the house, and the work to be done was not on the ground floor. And, being in Asheville, our lot was far from level.

Thinking it would be cost-efficient, we first went to a design/build firm with a list of our needs. They came back to us with several designs, but it became clear this was not the firm for us. None of the designs met our challenges, and their top personnel seemed less than interested in solving our problems. In addition, we would have had to choose from their limited collection of vendors for cabinetry, countertops, and more.

Everyone who touched our project took great pride in what they did, resulting in a spectacular end product. We not only got the kitchen and porch of our dreams, but our master bedroom closet was enlarged, and our deck was rebuilt.

So, we sought the advice of an architect whose work we had seen and admired. He met with us, listened to us, took our needs list, and came back with some incredible ideas. We then asked his advice on contractors. He had worked with R-Squared on several projects and highly recommended them. We then met with Joel Barto, president of R-Squared, and we immediately felt comfortable; we liked the fact that even though he ran a relatively small firm, they were highly experienced in doing projects even much more complicated and larger than ours.

We couldn’t have made a better choice. Joel had a lot of integrity and took a personal interest in our project, even though R-Squared was simultaneously building several homes. We were living in our home during the renovation, and their foreman did his utmost to keep it as neat and clean as possible.
